Gene Brown: Posted: Thursday, Oct 11th, 2012

Picture of Gene BrownGene passed away on October 3, 2012 at Kindred Hospital of the San Francisco Bay Area.

He was born in Arkansas where as a young boy, he worked on the family farm. He happily traveled with his parents & siblings to California settling in Aptos & Watsonville.

Gene attended local schools and while at Watsonville High School he worked for W.G. Winston's Union 76 Gas Station at 5th and Main St. A business he later purchased, becoming the youngest 76 station owner nationally. His station became a popular place for all the men with car problems and the young at heart. (Referencing article in the Register-Pajaroniann by Steve Bankhead, 2005).

Gene thrived on helping others, making him very happy & never wanting anything in return. Besides being a car enthusiast he also had a passion for deep sea fishing with his friends. Gene was especially proud of his trophy 28 pound Ling Cod caught in Monterey Bay.

After retiring he joined the Redwood City Farmer's Market dealing in fruit & vegetable sales focusing on strawberries. He enjoyed his customers and the public related to his personality & candor. The market is observing a memorial to Gene through the end of this season.

He is survived by his beloved mother Fern Brown; son, Steve Brown; daughters, Laura (Rich) Fernandez, Sheryl Brown, Lynnette (Ted) Midstokke and Lisa (Tom) Valiante; grandchildren; Corrin, Marissa, Elizabeth, Kelly, Curtis, Eric and Desiree; sisters, Sylvia (Duane) Wells, Aleta (Lane) Mead and Rexine (Garry) Watts. Also, several great grandchildren, extended family, friends & neighbors. Along with his devoted & loving companion, Anne Papac.

We have suffered a great loss and by keeping Gene deep in our hearts, he will be with us forever. Per his request, there will be no services. A private burial will be at the family plot in Oakwood Memorial Park, Santa Cruz, CA. Mehls Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
